The popular TV presenter was born along with his twinsister; Angela to Anthony Jones and Lorrette Jean in Jackson, Tennessee on September 20, 1968. His father was a middle school principal while his mother was a high school teacher.

Van Jones attended an audience at his hometown schools, Jackson Central-Merry High School. He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and Communications from the University of Tennessee at Martin (UT Martin) and a Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School in Connecticut.

During this time, Jones got internship programs with many publishers, including The Shreveport Times and Associated Press. It was also around this time that he launched his writing career, publishing some of his own work and making major contributions to various campus publications, including The Periscope; Vanderbilt University and the Fourteenth Circle; University of Tennessee.

Thanks to his passion for civil rights and social justice, Van Jones helped establish the non-governmental organization Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. A few years later, he co-founded Color of Change, which focuses exclusively on black, alongside James Rucker. After leaving the organization, Jones founded another NGO. Green For All’s vision was to lift Americans out of poverty by inventing green pathways.

Following his commitment to achieving this, Van Jones was appointed Special Advisor on Green Jobs, Business and Innovation to the White House Environmental Quality Council during Barrack Obama’s tenure. It is quite unfortunate that he only stayed in that position for six months when he was forced to resign after a series of allegations, most notably one of him supporting a 9/11 conspiracy theory. Despite this, he has received several awards and prizes as a result of his outstanding work.
