If you’ve ever watched the hit martial arts movies and never come across the name Jackie Chan then I doubt what you were really watching. Over the past half-century, it’s hard to single out anyone other than Jackie who has had such an impact on martial-action movies. Jackie was born on April 7, 1954 in Hong Kong.Kong to Charles and Lee-Lee Chan and they named him Chan Kong-Sang. His parents nicknamed him the Chinese Pao-pao, which means “cannonball” because of his energy and energy.
The Changs worked at the French Embassy in Hong Kong. Father Chen Zhiping worked as a cook, while mother Lily Chan worked as a housekeeper. He was sent to Nah-Hwa Elementary School but Chan failed in his first year. When the family emigrated to Australia in 1960, seven-year-old Chan was left behind at the Chinese Opera Research Institute. Over the next decade he learned martial arts and acrobatics alongside acting and singing.
Chan received his training in Hapkido under Grandmaster Jin Pal Kim and attained a black belt. He then attended Dickson College after moving to Canberra. After struggling for a breakthrough, Jackie starred in an adult film All In The Family which had a bit of a comedy twist, it was her first nude sex scene. It is the only film he has made to date without an action scene or martial arts.
Chan got his chance when film producer Willie Chan (later to become his longtime manager) invited him to do a film role after being impressed by one of his stunts in 1976, by which time Bruce Lee had just passed away and where the search for a successor was launched. Knowing he had to be different to distinguish himself from Bruce Lee, he added comedy and a fierce approach to his stunts, creating a refreshing new genre of “kung fu comedy”.

He went on to star in works such as Shaolin Wooden Men (1976 aka Shaolin Wooden Men), To Kill With Intrigue (1977 aka To Kill With Intrigue), Yi zhao ban shi chuang jiang hu (1978 aka Half A Loaf of Kung Fu) and Magnificent Bodyguards (1978 aka Magnificent Bodyguards), all of which did quite well in theaters. His real breakthrough was with the hit Drunken Master (1978 aka Drunken Master), which became a favorite among martial arts film fans.
Jackie went on to star in other hits – Detective Story 2, Miracles – Mr. Canton and Lady Rose, Armor of God 2: Operation Condor (aka Armor of God 2) and Supercop. With its larger-than-life stature in cemented Asia, the US market hadn’t fully given in to its superstar charm. In 1995, the action movie Rumble in the Bronx finally gave him his huge box office success in the American market.
It’s interesting that such a physical man would be given vigor to music. He has released an impressive 20 albums since 1984. His songs are in Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Taiwan, and English. He often sings the theme songs from his films. Jackie speaks nine languages fluently. During his many stunts he fractured his skull, dislocated his pelvis, broke his fingers, toes, nose, both cheekbones, hips, sternum, neck, ankle and the ribs.

While still married, Chan had an affair with his then mistress, beauty queen Elaine Ng and she gave birth to Jackie’s daughter. Etta Ng Chok Lam was born on November 19, 1999. Despite the publicity in the media, Feng-Jiao Lin decided to forgive her husband.
